In August 2024, I had the pleasure of visiting our exceptional travel partners in Greenland and experiencing the awe-inspiring Camp Kiattua. This luxury glamping destination, hidden in a remote fjord, is as exclusive as it gets.
Throughout the trip, I swam among icebergs, savored meals made with fresh local ingredients, and embraced the peace of a digital detox.

A warm welcome in Nuuk
My journey started as fellow guests and I touched down in Nuuk. Our private guide greeted us warmly and set the tone for the unforgettable adventure ahead.
The real magic began with a 90-minute open-boat ride through the clear, icy Arctic waters. This exhilarating trip allowed us to get close to nature at its most pristine. A closed-boat option is also available for those who prefer a bit more shelter.
Picture the untouched wilderness, the crisp sea air, and the refreshing saltwater mist on your skin. It’s a pure, unfiltered connection with the Arctic. And don’t worry about the cold – guests get cozy insulated overalls to keep warm.
One of the first awe-inspiring moments was a stop at a majestic waterfall. Our captain silenced the engine, letting us drift quietly along the shore. The only sound was the steady rush of the waterfall and the faint whisper of the wind.
Sipping hot drinks with light refreshments in hand, we soaked in the untamed beauty of Greenland. Just when you think it couldn’t get any more spectacular, you sail past towering icebergs, gliding gracefully like frozen giants across the water. It’s a feeling that defies words.

Arriving at Camp Kiattua
As we got closer, the camp came into view – a cluster of white tipis nestled against a dramatic valley backdrop. These tents would be our home for the next few days, and even from a distance, the camp exuded an almost magical vibe.
The moment we stepped off the boat and set foot on Greenlandic soil, it was clear: this was no ordinary retreat. It was an ancient, untamed land where time seemed to stand still, yet every moment held a sense of awe.

After a brief introduction, we were shown our individual tents. Each was spacious, luxurious, and thoughtfully equipped with plush beds, electric heating, and heated mattresses to keep us cozy, even in the Arctic chill.
There was also plenty of room to store luggage and move around freely, but the true luxury was in the small details. Each tipi had a private bathroom and shower tent with hot running water, flushable toilets, and heating. These small comforts felt indulgent in such a remote location.
While the camp might not be the Four Seasons or the Ritz, its true luxury lies in its remoteness. There’s something undeniably special about being surrounded by Arctic wilderness while enjoying modern amenities. It’s what makes this experience so extraordinary.

Dining at Camp Kiattua
Dinner was an experience all on its own. We gathered in the spacious restaurant tent, where a gourmet 3-course meal was ready. The chef’s skills rivaled top-tier restaurants, enhanced by the freshest local ingredients – many of which had been caught just hours earlier.
The menu included fresh fish, reindeer hunted in the nearby valley, mussels from the fjord, and even snow crab. Vegetarian and vegan options were also available, with every dietary request handled with care.
As for drinks, the premium selection of wines and spirits added to the refined atmosphere. But the true pièce de résistance? Iceberg-chilled cocktails! Yes, the ice in our drinks came straight from the icebergs floating in the fjord, giving each sip a surreal touch.
After an evening of fantastic dining and lively conversation, it was time to retreat to the comfort of our tents. I’m not exaggerating when I say I had the best sleep of my life. The crisp Arctic air, the bed’s warmth, and the river’s soothing sound just outside created a peaceful lullaby.
Moments like these, where luxury meets nature so effortlessly, make this experience so memorable.

Amazing experiences at Camp Kiattua
The days that followed were filled with adventures that deepened our connection to Greenland’s rugged beauty. After savoring a delicious breakfast buffet complete with local treats and fresh pastries, the options for activities seemed endless. Let me share some of the ones that made our time here truly unforgettable.
- Uncover some of the top experiences our guests have enjoyed while traveling with us.
1. Deep sea fishing
One of the most memorable activities was the morning fishing trip, where we quite literally caught our lunch.
Our host took us on a boat ride to a nearby fjord, where we tried traditional Greenlandic fishing firsthand. The catch was incredible, and there’s something deeply satisfying about preparing a meal from ingredients you’ve gathered yourself. The freshness of the fish, combined with the stunning surroundings, made for a heavenly lunch.

2. Hiking
The other guests and I spent the rest of the day hiking through the valley with our knowledgeable guide. They shared fascinating stories about life in Greenland, the landscape, and the local wildlife, including reindeer.
It was a breathtaking moment when we reached the top of a mountain and looked down at the camp nestled far below. The area’s remoteness was genuinely humbling, with nothing around for hundreds of kilometers.
Our guides thought of everything, even setting up a picnic stop mid-hike with hot drinks, sweet treats, and camp-made reindeer jerky. The stunning scenery and thoughtful details made the day feel like a dream.

3. Swimming among icebergs
Every day at the camp brought new and surreal experiences. One of the highlights was an exhilarating jump into the Arctic waters from an iceberg – what the locals call “the power of ice.”
As you carefully step onto the frozen surface, you can feel the cold, shifting mass beneath your feet before you plunge into the icy water. The unique insulated suits keep you warm and buoyant while you float in the ocean, making you truly feel alive.
4. Kayaking in icy fjords
Another adventure was kayaking across the fjord to gather Angelica, a fragrant plant we used in our meals. Paddling through the calm waters, surrounded by towering cliffs and floating icebergs, was incredible.
We hiked to a famous fjord on a different day, where massive icebergs calve off the glacier and drift across the water. It was a breathtaking sight that was the perfect reward after our hike.

Other highlights of my stay at Camp Kiattua
1. Experiencing the warm hospitality
Returning to camp after a day filled with adventures was nothing short of blissful.
The staff at Camp Kiattua truly stood out. They offered impeccable service, genuine warmth, and eagerness to share stories about Greenland and their lives. Those engaging conversations added a personal touch, making our stay here even more memorable.
I also have to mention the nightly turndown service in our tents. The staff would refresh our space each evening by making beds, providing extra blankets, and dimming the lights. It was a lovely surprise in such a remote location that showed how much attention to detail is put into caring for the guests.
2. Savoring a digital detox
One of the most refreshing things about Camp Kiattua is the chance to unplug from your devices. With limited mobile reception and Wi-Fi only available in the restaurant tent, it’s the perfect opportunity to disconnect from the outside world.
It allows you to really immerse yourself in the moment. Whether bonding with fellow travelers or enjoying the peace of the Arctic wilderness, it’s a rare chance to reconnect with yourself away from modern distractions.

3. Making a sustainable travel choice
What makes Camp Kiattua even more remarkable is its commitment to sustainability.
Every detail is designed to respect Greenland’s pristine environment, from eco-friendly shampoos and soaps to locally sourced ingredients in each meal. The camp’s dedication to eco-conscious luxury lets guests enjoy the beauty of the Arctic without harming the delicate ecosystem.
This rare combination of indulgence and environmental responsibility makes every moment spent here feel great.

4. Connecting deeply with nature
After 4 unforgettable days at the camp, we left feeling completely renewed, as if we’d lived a lifetime in that short span. The untouched wilderness, crisp Arctic air, and deep connection to nature can shift your perspective.
Kiattua wasn’t just a trip. It felt like stepping into a timeless world where every moment mattered – a chance to reconnect with nature in ways I hadn’t expected. Those days left a lasting impact, and I long to return to this haven of serenity and wonder.
For anyone seeking peace and indulgence, there’s no place quite like Greenland’s wilderness. A visit here leaves a lasting impression long after you leave.
Packing tip: It’s wise to come prepared for the occasional rain, which adds to the charm. When the clouds hang low over the fjord and the mist rises, the area becomes mystical, deepening your connection with nature.

Of all the seasons in Greenland, summer is the best time to visit. It’s the season of the midnight sun when the skies stay light long into the night. And while it’s deep in the Arctic Circle, Greenland during summer is typically mild enough to be explored in comfort.
In this guide, discover unique experiences that visitors to Greenland can enjoy in summer.
- Uncover unforgettable adventures among these Greenland luxury tours.
1. Kayak, paddleboard, or swim between icebergs

Around Greenland’s coasts, the ice caps that cover this island crumble into the Arctic Ocean, scattering icebergs across the sea. In the summer months, visitors can paddle between these serene chunks of ice.
Kayaks or paddle boards are one of the most thrilling options. Led by a knowledgeable guide and protected by warm, dry suits and life jackets, adventurers can enjoy their spectacular surroundings in safety and comfort.
Alternatively, the brave can even swim in the Arctic waters. Travellers can walk across icebergs in a thermal survival suit and jump into the water.

2. Catch local fish in the Arctic waters

In summer, local waters teem with fish that visit Greenland. The sea around Nuuk, the island’s capital, is one of the best spots for open-water fishing. You can catch wolffish, flounder, cod, halibut, and more.
On a deep-sea fishing tour, visitors are guided to prime locations and supplied with all the equipment and skills they need. Then, they return to shore and learn to clean and dry the catch before settling down for a hearty seafood meal.
3. Spot wildlife on Greenland’s seas

Throughout the warmer season, Greenland’s abundant fish stocks don’t just attract human visitors. During these months, whales travel to Greenland from the south in search of a feast.
You’ll have a chance to glimpse these magnificent creatures whenever you head to sea. On a sea-life tour through Disko Bay, the UNESCO Heritage Site, your captain and guide can take you to the best places to spot up to 15 species.
Among the sea ice and expansive views, keep a lookout for dolphins, seals, and even eagles.

4. Discover Inuit culture in Kapisillit
For a taste of Inuit culture, visitors to Greenland can venture to the small village of Kapisillit, deep in the sea fjord, Nuup Kangerlua. It’s a settlement of just 50 people accessible only by boat or helicopter.
The journey itself is breathtaking. When guests arrive, they can meet local families and participate in kaffemik – a local gathering involving coffee, cake, and other traditional delicacies. It’s an unforgettable insight into the local way of life.
5. Go glamping in Greenland’s wilderness

Wake up to views over fjords and ancient mountains. Sleep and dine in comfort around a fire. Enjoy the silence of the Arctic wilderness. Visitors can do all this and more on a glamping trip in Greenland.
There are 2 exclusive camping destinations available in Greenland – Camp Kiattua and Disko Island. Each only has space for a maximum of 10 guests, making this an extra-special opportunity for a select few.

6. Bask in the midnight sun

While Arctic winter is known for the northern lights, the summer is the season of the midnight sun. Otherwise known as the polar day, this is the time when the sun never drops below the horizon. This phenomenon allows visitors to enjoy light throughout the night from May to July.
These longer days offer more time for unique adventures in Greenland’s outdoors. To experience these never-ending evenings is calming and rejuvenating.
7. Hike on deserted islands, mountain peaks, and dramatic coastlines

Exploring Greenland on foot is only really possible in the summer. Much of the snow melts during this season, revealing the rocky terrain beneath and opening paths between the coast and the Greenland Ice Sheet.
Travelers to Iceland can explore the country’s many breathtaking hiking destinations. For instance, the island of Uummanaq, with its jagged rocky peak, is a hiker’s paradise, with views over the ice-strewn fjord.
Alternatively, from the Inuit village of Ilulissat, a trail follows the coast south to Sermermiut, a settlement site dating back thousands of years.
Greenland summer weather

While Greenland is located almost entirely in the Arctic Circle, it’s not as cold as you might expect for a country at this latitude. Greenland receives the Gulf Stream, which brings milder air from the south in winter and summer.
While winter in Greenland does tend to be snowy, average temperatures for the summer in Nuuk are as follows:
- May: 1.1°C (34°F)
- June: 4.7°C (41°F)
- July: 7°C (45°F)
- August: 6.7°C (44°F).
Of course, the climates in Greenland differ across the country. For instance, the fjord systems around the capital, Nuuk, can be frequently foggy and overcast. Meanwhile, east Greenland is known for its high winds. In the south of Greenland, you’re likelier to feel warmer temperatures than in the north.
